Dental Fillings

Dental fillings are the most common option for repairing damaged or decayed teeth. If you are experiencing pain or if a cavity is found, we will numb the area with a local anesthetic, remove the tooth decay and fill the tooth with one of several dental filling materials. Today, teeth can be filled with gold, porcelain, silver amalgam or a tooth colored composite. In many cases, a damaged tooth can be repaired with a composite filling in just one visit to our dental office.

Scaling & Root Planing

Scaling and root planing is the most common form of treatment for periodontal (gum) disease. Scaling is the removal of calculus (commonly called tartar) and plaque that attach to the tooth surfaces. The process especially targets the area below the gum line, along the root. Root planing is a process that smooths the tooth’s surface, making it harder for plaque to stick. For this reason, the root surface is made smooth in a process called root planing. Root planing removes any remaining calculus and smooths irregular areas of the root surface.

Root Canal Therapy

Root Canal therapy may be required to help save an infected or abscessed tooth. When decay spreads past the enamel layer it can cause an infection to the soft pulp in the tooth. This infection can be very painful and spread to surrounding teeth. During a root canal treatment, Dr. McDonald carefully removes the infected pulp from the center of the tooth. The canal is then treated with medicine, root canal filling, and ultimately a permanent dental crown is usually required.

Dental Extractions

While our goal is to preserve the health of your natural teeth, there are circumstances which require a tooth extraction. Advanced tooth decay, severe infection of the tooth roots, and tooth crowding are all reasons Dr. McDonald may recommend a dental extraction as part of your treatment plan. When a tooth must be removed or repaired through surgery, it is known as oral surgery. Whether it is an impacted wisdom tooth or you are in need of a dental implant, we will do our best to make certain you are comfortable before and during the surgery. After the procedure, you will be given instructions to help make recovery as painless and fast as possible.

Wisdom Teeth Removal

Dr. McDonald and the team at Harvest Dental has performed thousands of wisdom teeth removals across the state for patients just like you. The average adult mouth will hold 28 teeth, however by late teens to early 20s many adults may have 32 teeth. The final four teeth are known as the “wisdom teeth.” For most patients, there is not enough room for the additional teeth and they must be removed to avoid oral healthcare issues. As part of your complete exams, Dr. McDonald will use x-rays to evaluate the current position of the teeth and predict if they could pose a future problem.
